As you already probably know Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a franchise about four teenaged fictional anthropomorphic turtles that were named after famous artists of Renaissance. They are all trained by the also anthropomorphic rat senses in the field of ninjutsu. Their home is actually the sewers of New York City and their job is to fight different criminals, evil overlords, various creatures and aliens. They try their best to stay away from the eyes of society. The creators behind TMNT are Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. These characters first appeared in the comic books that were published by Mirage Studios. Soon after, they were expanded into cartoon series, different video games, toys and other merchandise. The peak of their popularity was in the late 1980s and 1990s when they received success and huge fame worldwide.

The main characters are Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Splinter. Leonardo or simply Leo is the tactical, brave leader and devoted student of his senseiHe wears a blue mask and has two swords. Since he is the most conscientious of the four turtles, he usually bears the burden of being responsible for his brothers, which often leads him into the conflict with Raphael. Leonardo was named after Leonardo da Vinci which was the Italian polymath, painter, engineer, inventor, writer, anatomist, and sculptor. Michelangelo who is often called Mikey or Mike is the most stereotypical teenager in the team. He is pretty much a free-spirited, reckless, goofy and likes to joke a lot. He is mostly known for his love of pizza. Michelangelo has an orange mask and wields a pair of nunchaku. He is a source of the comic relief, though he still has an obvious adventurous side. Since he is the least mature of the four TMNT, he presents characteristics of a “surfer” type and is often depicted with a Southern Californian accent. He is named after the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer – Michelangelo. It’s interesting that his name was originally misspelled “Michaelangelo” by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

Donatello is the scientist, engineer, inventor, and simply technological genius. He wears a purple mask and has a bo staff. Donatello is probably the turtle who is the least violent and he preferres to use his knowledge to solve conflicts instead of physical fight. However, he never hesitates to defend his brothers. He is named after the early Renaissance Italian artist and sculptor Donatello. Raphael or just Raph is the bad boy in the team. Raphael owns a red mask and wields a pair of sai. He is pretty aggressive and he almost never hesitates to throw the first punch. His personality is usually fierce and sarcastic, and oftentimes delivers deadpan humor. On the other hand, he is very loyal to his brothers and sensei. He is named after the Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, Raphael.

Splinter is the sensei of The Turtles’ and their adoptive father. He is a Japanese mutant rat that learned the art of ninjutsu from his owner and master named Hamato Yoshi. It’s interesting that in the IDW comics, Splinter is actually Hamato Yoshi that has been reincarnated as a mutated rat.
