Friday the 13th: The Game is a survival video game from a horror genre that is developed by IIIFonic and published by Gun Media. It was based on a film franchise of the same name. It’s release date was 13th of October in 2017 and it can be played on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It’s designed as a multiplayer game (although there is a single-player available too) that has up to seven players controlling Camp Crystal Lake counselors against one player controlling Jason Voorhees. It has a semi-open world that players can further explore. The goal of Jason Voorhees is to kill as many counselors as possible inside of a specific time frame. Jason has special abilities, that include the ability to sense counselors nearby, as well as the teleportation to anywhere on the map. The players who control the counselors need to stun Jason using firecrackers and bear traps. Moreover, they can use some projectile and melee-based weapons that can be found in the map. As counselor, your goal is to escape the map alive. It can be done faster, if you complete map’s side objectives which are easier to complete with the help of other players. Counselors can also defeat Jason with epic win condition, however it requires a good teamwork and planning and is very difficult.
There are five maps available and each of them are based on locations from the first five Friday the 13th movies. Camp Crystal Lake is from the first film, Packanack Lodge was the setting in the second film, Higgins Haven is from the third movie, Jarvis House from the fourth and Pinehurst was the setting in the fifth film. Furthermore, a few actors from these films got their roles in the game as well. Harry Mandredini who made the soundtrack for original film, made the soundtrack for this video game too.
Original release date was actually set in fall, 2016, however it was pushed to May 26, 2017. This initial release was digital exclusive, while physical copy became available on Friday, October 13 in 2017. Since Cunningham and Victor Miller had a fight over the rights, which included lawsuits and ownership of the original film, the updated for this game have been canceled, which was announced on June 11, 2018 by Gun Media. Miller eventually won the lawsuit and announced that Black Tower Studios will be a new development partner for the game. This game received mixed reviews.
