For all of you who don’t know, The Cybermen are a fictional race of cyborgs. They are one of the most persistent enemies of the Doctor in the science fiction TV programme, Doctor Who. In the series, the Cybermen are actually a species of space-faring cyborgs without any emotions. They want to co-opt human beings or other similar species to join and populate their ranks. Cybermen first appeared in 1966, and they were created by Dr. Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis. Apart from this series, Cybermen have also appeared in similar programs and spin-off media, such as novels, audiobooks, comic books, and video games.

While the Doctor’s other enemies called the Daleks, remained unchanged during the original series’s 26-season run, the Cybermen were change with almost every new appearance. The Cybermen are humanoid, but have continued to be changed until they have just few organic parts left. They retain living human brains. In their first appearance in the series, hands were the only parts of their bodies that looked like human body parts. In their next appearance in The Moonbase from 1967, their bodies were totally covered in their metallic suits, and their hands were then replaced with three finger claws. However, they did change back to normal five-fingered hands in The Invasion from 1968. There are relatively just a few of them left, so the Cybermen tend towards covert activity, scheming from hiding and using human pawns or robots to act in their place until they really need to appear. They also want to increase their numbers, so that is why they are trying to convert others into Cybermen. That process is familiar with the name “cyber-conversion” or “Cybernisation” in the older episodes and “upgrading” in the newer episodes. It is usually very painful process, because body parts are removed and replaced with cybernetic replacements.

It has been implied that they still have some organic components underneath their suits, which means that they are cyborgs and not robots. In The Tenth Planet, a Cyberman tells a group of humans that “our brains are just like yours”, even though in Attack of the Cybermen from 1985, their brains seem to have been totally exchanged with electronics. Also in this story, two human slave-prisoners of the Cybermen on the planet Telos, named Bates and Stratton, reveal that their organic arms and legs have been removed by the Cybermen and replaced by cyber-parts. In Earthshock from 1982, the chins were kinda visible through a clear perspex area on the helmet and that in fact suggested some kind of organic matter. In The Tomb of the Cybermen (1967), their veins and brains were visible through the domed head of the Cyber-Controller, and s in Attack of the Cybermen (1985) and “The Age of Steel” (2006), the brain is visible. However, in Revenge of the Cybermen from 1975, the Doctor says they are “total machine creatures”.
