For the first five seasons, episodes were showing on Cartoon Network. However, the sixth season was released on Netflix in 2014. They’ve announced in July, 2018, that there will be additional 12 episodes produced for streaming service that is yet to be developed for Disney. George Lucas got the idea for The Clone Wars way back in 2002. The show called The Clone Wars started showing on Cartoon Network in 2003 and it was produced by Genndy Tartakovsky. In 2005, the show was announced as Celebration III, which continued as 3-D of the pilot. At the same time. Dave Filoni became a supervising director. Lucas gave Filoni and Gilroy the full freedom when it came to creativity. However, a few characters and locations were off-limits. Those included Han Solo, Chewbacca, Boba Fettt and Jabba Desilijic Tiure. Lucas also didn’t want the planets which were seen in the film to be explored here, with the exception of Coruscant. Eventually, he changed his mind about the characters as well as the planets.

Because the show had the unique tone, Lucas struggled to sell this series to TV networks. For example, Fox immediately refused to buy it. At the end, there were two networks bidding over it: TNT and Cartoon Network, which eventually got it.

When CN screened the episode for critics in 2008, it got a decent reactions. They decided to debut the series on October 3 in 2008, with episode called “Ambush“. It brought 3.96 million viewers and became the most watched premiere on this channel. Season 2 started showing in 2nd of October in 2009, however the first two episodes of this season attracted less audience. Out of 100 best animated series of all times, IGN listed Clone Wars as the number 89 and Star Wars: The Clone Wars was ranked 21st.
