About Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie focused on Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the infamous band called Queen. The film follows the life of Freddie as well as the other members of Queen. The plot is set in between 1970, when Freddie joined Queen and 1985, when their Live Aid performance occurred. Bohemian Rhapsody is directed by Bryan Singer, written by Anthony McCarten and produced by Graham King and Jim Beach. It stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin, Gwilym Lee as Brian May, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Joe Mazzello as John Deacon, Aidan Gillen as John Reid, Allen Leech as Paul Prenter, Tom Hollander as Jim Beach, Mike Myers as Ray Foster and many others. At first, Sacha Baron Cohen (famous for his roles in Borat and The Dictator) to play Freddie, however he had creative differences with producers, so they hired Malek instead. The movie was released in the UK on 24th of October in 2018, and in the US on 2nd of November that same year.

Bohemian Rhapsody got both negative and positive reviews. Rami Malek’s performance was highly praised, while critics didn’t like the portrayal of Mercury’s life as well as the portrayals of other Queen members. Anyhow, the movie was a major success, grossing over $860 million worldwide and setting the all-time box office records for drama and biopic genres. It received many awards, including 4 Oscars: Best Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. It also received a nomination for Best Picture. However, it won Best Motion Picture – Drama on the Golden Globe Awards. Rami Malek also won the Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA award for Best Actor.

The accuracy

There were multiple events in the movie that were out of order. The director however stated, that this had to be done for dramatic effect. He also said that the point was to make a movie, not the documentary.
The first inaccuracy occurs at the very beginning when Freddie meets other members of Queen. It wasn’t as simple as it was showed in the film. The second event that was wrong is about John Deacon. He was actually the fourth bassist of Queen, not the original one as represented in the movie. Furthermore, Freddie wasn’t the the first member of Queen that made a solo album. The first one was actually Taylor who released his Fun In Space in 1981, followed by May who released Star Fleet Project in 1983, while Mercury’s Mr. Bad Guy was released in 1985. The major inaccuracy was about Queen splitting up and then reuniting on Live Aid. Queen never actually split and in fact they finished their tour just eight weeks before Live Aid. Many details of Freddie’s relationship with Mary Austin and Jim Hutton were left out as well.
